Managing the Morning Madness

Back to school means  back to routines both for ourselves and our loved ones. With regimens of day long school and work, we often focus on providing healthy lunches to get us through the busy day. But what is often lost in the shuffle is a nutrient rich breakfast. Morning madness often results in less healthy choices like: muffins, sugary cereals and various breads.

Instead, opt for a fast and delicious fibre, omega and antioxidant rich smoothie. Simply use various berries, Salba and hempseeds. High phytonutrients and low carbs in berries make these fruits among the best of healthy food choices. Vitamin C antioxidants in the berries and Salba, along with Vitamin E in hemp, both help to lower the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Berries and hemp seeds are also high in soluble fibre to help lower cholesterol and Salba’s high insoluable fibre allows for the gentle removal of intestinal waste. The high Omega-3 in Salba combined with the hard-to-find Omega-6 GLA’s in Salba are anti-inflammatory and energy boosting. So start your day with a bang!

Don’t forget to stock up on your fresh local berries now for a fast and fresh morning break for the colder months to follow!

2 cups frozen mixed berries (I like an equal mix of Strawberry, raspberry & blueberry)
2 ½ cups rice or almond milk
¼ cup Mum’s Original Roasted Hempseeds
2 tablespoons ground Salba seed
1 tablespoon honey or agave (optional)
¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Serve immediately. Makes approximately 4 cups, or 4 servings.
