The thyroid is a small gland but it can have some big effects on your health when it stops working properly. This small butterfly shaped gland as the base of your neck is responsible for controlling how your metabolism runs, so a problem with your thyroid means far reaching problems with your overall well-being.

Long work hours and the rigours of parenting mean that many women write off fatigue and fuzzy headedness as part of their normal lives, but you could be ignoring signs your body is trying to give that something is wrong. With 1 woman in 8 developing some kind of thyroid disorder in their lifetimes, you owe it to yourself to visit your doctor if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)

Unusual fatigue and not feeling refreshed after sleeping

Slow movements and thoughts

Weight gain without any change in your diet or exercise routine

Hair loss

Constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel, digestion problems

Muscle aches and weakness, muscle cramps, stiffness

Sensitivity to cold

Irregular or heavy periods

Low blood pressure

Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism)

Anxiety, nervousness, irritability, mood swings

Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)

Loose bowel movements, more frequent need to use the bathroom

Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia), rapid heartbeat

Weight loss despite an increase in appetite

Muscle weakness especially in thighs and upper arms

Shaky hands

Hair changes, hair thinning

Excessive sweating, sensitivity to heat
