With spring just around the corner, allergy season will also rear its ugly head for approximately 8 million Canadians. While medication is still the best course of action to treat severe allergies, there are some foods with great anti-allergy properties that you can incorporate into your diet to combat all that sniffling and sneezing.

Onions

The bioflavonoid quercetin that is found in onions, apples, tea, cabbage, and red wine helps to fight inflammation and reduce your symptoms by reducing your histamine reaction.

Almonds

Magnesium rich foods such as almonds, wheat bran, and cashews help to fight allergies with their bronchodilator and antihistamine qualities by having a calming effect on the muscles of the bronchial tubes.

Salmon

Fatty fishes like salmon, mackerel, and sardines, or anything high in Omega 3 fatty acids like walnuts and flax seeds seem to have anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Peppers, Kiwi, and Strawberries

Vitamin C can help to keep your inflammatory cells from releasing histamine – the stuff that creates itchiness and hives. Be aware thought that you need to get as much Vitamin C as you can from your food, not just supplements – fresh is much more affective.

Yogurt with Probiotics

Probiotics have been proven to have anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory affects by decreasing the response of your body’s immune system to allergens, particularly pollen.

Turmeric

Found in many curries, turmeric has strong proven antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Garlic

With strong antioxidant properties, garlic can help block the chemicals that lead to allergic reactions. Studies have found garlic to be particularly helpful in combatting the symptoms of hay fever.
