Could Your Heartburn Drugs Be Causing Kidney Damage

If you are taking prescription heartburn drugs, you may want to speak to your doctor. A recent study has shown that popular prescription heartburn drugs prescribed under the brand names Losec, Nexium, and Prevacid could lead to long term kidney damage and should include a warning for users.

These drugs, which are part of the category of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) have shown a 20% increase in the possibility of long term kidney damage over other another category of heartburn medication called H2 blockers which is widely available over the counter under the brand names Zantac or Pepcid.

PPIs have also been linked in the past to low magnesium and vitamin B12 levels, and an increased rate of C dificile, pneumonia and fractures.

Health Canada recommends that PPIs should only be used in the lowest possible doses and for the shortest amount of time possible. Although the risk of kidney damage is minimal, the number of patients on these drugs for prolonged periods of time is in the millions.

If you do take Losec, Nexium, and Prevacid or any other PPI medications, it is advised that your doctor should regularly revisit your usage and determine whether you need to continue.
